Just when I was going to do away with the practice of digging a large hole
and filling it with all kinds of great stuff.......My pumpkin pal" Big on
seed Tim" Floridas state record holder tells me he heard that Larue digs a
3 ft hole and and fills it with great composted manure and that George
Lloyd digs a 6 foot hole and fills with manure then covers it over and lets
the roots hit the jackpot??..........O.K. I have heard accounts of both
sides of the spectrum some say AG roots don't go down that far and then
others say if its loose and conditions are right roots do go down.......I
have only experienced the depth of 2 ft but thats as deep as my hole was
dug.......personally i would be happy to skip digging these massive
holes........Another thought came to mind granted these stories are true
that perhaps the arguements "on how far the roots go down" MAY NOT be the
point...maybe the benefits are better drainage, maybe added warmth, perhaps
some beneficial gases or some other element......WHAT DO YOU THINK??? What
do you do??

The roots have no problem going down at least 4' and they will grow toward
food.
