Rick this is what i think, that there are a few specific genes that are
responsible for outrageous growth.....My guess was that this is what the
Zehrs friend have identified..(this probably a rumor)........I really don't
know...and thats the problem we really don't know what is making some
pumpkins get into the 1000 lb range....and perhaps every gene has to be set
up properly to assure that the pumpkin ,roots, leaves, mains, flowers, wall
structure,stem structure...all the parts fall into place.....for a pumpkin
to reach its full potential.... then on top of that the responsibility of
the grower to be almost impeccable with its cultural needs..........
Another thought is maybe the genes responsible for pumpkin size are open
ended or evolving meaning that when we as growers have selected the best
stem, greatest wall thickness, most vigorous vine, no ribs, no sag rings,
fastest root growth and have discovered the best cultural practices through
experimentation and discovery will we begin to see that, the true
potential.....so any experiment, any notes, any keen observations and any
DELIBERATE crosses help no matter how small for example look at 96"
parentages Wentzell starts at 102 selfs it,next year produces a 320 selfs
that,next year a 322 then a 345 then a 701......this could be a brillant
discovery was it genetics or was the plant making some sort of
adjustments.......so no contribution is small if you learn from it
theres too much we don't know/ and shrug it off to luck....but i think the
more knowledge we have on theses babies the luckier will get..........brock
