In bringing together the southern grower I have been surprised to see a
developing interest in growing AGs in none other then our Lone Star
State of Texas. Audie Starkey has already grown a 522 and is primed to
break that record soon. A number of other Texans have come forward
asking to become involved in the Southern Pumpkin movement so it has
caused me to consider reshaping the definition of a southern pumpkin. It
will now include as before the Southeastern states, below the Mason
Dixon Line and east of the Mississippi, plus the Deep South states of
Texas and Louisiana. The growers in these states can compete for the
"Southern Cup" this year. As we all saw, southern heat was no deterrence
to Chris Anderson, with his champion pumpkin "Jabba" at 977. With the
right techniques let us blow away that myth and create the first
Southern Kilopound Pumpkin.
