I Have some background in plant biology and plant biology throught my
schooling at OSU . Irradiating of any seed can and will effect some part of
the genetic makeup of that seed. In most cases irradiation is used to
isolate
a specific set of genes or even a single gene. By irradiating a AG you will
have a slim chance in effecting the gene that controls the size of the
pumpkin, That is if you get the seed to sprout and grow. Certian chemicals
can give you the same effect, but both techniques are diffucult to master
and
sometimes the alteration does not show up until the second or third
generation. good luck, but don't use your best seeds.

John M,
Well said!! I have been staying away from the irradiation E-Mails, but here
I am. I have been working on and off over the last 15 years....mostly
off.....but I have expended a significant amount of research time, effort and
money. I have not yet been able to find the magic bullet with Chromosome
doublers, cell division enhancers and other growth regulators...working in
conjunction with plant researchers in several universities. Just because I
haven't found the magic bullet in 15 years, doesn't mean that it doesn't exist
( I'm not sure anyone else has found the true magic bullet either). I have a
degree in science and would be the last one to discourage anyone from
researching this or any other topic . Some of the substances and procedures
that are used to perform genetic research can kill you or make you very sick,
if you latch on to the wrong thing and use it improperly . So be very careful
and get professional help on these projects. #2..... any resreach like this
should be done as a sideline on an extra plant for quite often the results of
the experiments end in deformed , weird plants. So don't try new things of any
type on all your plants or you may scratch off a whole year with messed up
plants. #3 don't be discouraged, just be careful and don't wipe out all your
plants.....I took a course in college called the History of Science. One of
the things I remembered was that many of the major Scientific discoveries in
history were made by people new to a scientific field...their minds are not
clouded by the scientific gospel of the time. Researchers running along with
blinders on because they have been brainwashed by their peers on what is
possible. So go out there and keep researching on the side, but for the most
part, your best results will be turned in with good gardening techniques and
alot of sweat. If you prepare your soil better and take care of proper plant
nutrition, you will see a better growth response than any bullet that I have
seen so far.
