I am embarrassed and proud. Proud, that my good friend Beth Rado told it
like it is when it comes to the dampening effect that has rolled over
the pumpkin-list lately, like some sort of plague. Embarrassed, that I
didn't get on that band wagon myself a little sooner. Creating the SPGA
was a direct result of the freedom to speak freely on the list. I think
that your are going to see that it was an important development in the
expansion of our sport. It would not have happened if unspoken
restrictions were in place. Maybe they were there but that my own
naiveté let me move unrestricted long enough to bring the southern
grower together before I became too self conscious to speak. I suppose I
felt I was a representative for the SPGA now and had to speak
differently. Interestingly enough the newsletter/magazine for the SPGA
is all about that side of pumpkin growing which is now being drained
from the list. The humorous side, the human side, Heavy Hitters and 4 H
Clubs, big pumpkins as well as the little ones when it doesn't work out
just right. I guess having numerous e-mails coming to me personally
satisfied my need to communicate in the ways that some on the list feel
were not appropriate to serious growing. All I kept on thinking was just
how unique and marvelous that period on the list was for me. I don't
know of another form of communication like it. One-on-one conversations
are not at all the same. I am probably one of those responsible for the
uprise of the word police and could easily understand someone asking me
to restrain myself a bit but for some reason the atmosphere on the list
now is such that I use it only for technical information. That just
misses the boat completely when it comes to what growing these giants is
all about according to my book. I am not one to easily know the middle
ground of anything. How to find it here is a mystery as well. I think
speaking up is a good start and I thank Beth Rado for showing the way.
Thanks Beth.
