survival

John, I germinate about 50 seeds treated with colchicine. Out of this I
put out about 5-10 depending on how energetic I think I will be and how
good the seedlings look. Our soil is a real light wind blown type so I
don't work it in advance. As the plants grow I bury the stems, lay down
newspaper for moisture and mulch with the weeds as I pull them. The paper
and weeds are next years organic material. Ahead of the plant I soak the
soil one time with chicken manure tea. I leaf feed with miracle grow and
spray & grow. We have lots of 80ºnites and 105º+days. During the whole
season I might be working 7days a week so I end up only caring for 1 or 2
plants. If I've ever had any wilts or rots I was not aware. I don't think
I have but some of the plants I just don't get back to until fall. I
manhandle my vines and set pumpkins, aggressively and never had one break.
Last year was the first time I knew about putting the 90º+ bend in the
vine, I did that all at once with no problem. I found out later it should
be done in steps. I have a plant that will grow with a minimum of care, It
doesn't even wilt at 110º if the soils moist. I'm stuck at the 300lb level
because of heat. I'm thinking about a reflective rigid insulation on 4
sides, top and bottom, with vent holes. Have fun Roger
