Bill, I experienced the same effect 2 years ago. I had put nitrogen 
fertilizer in 4 weeks prior, and my plant went zooming and even thru a 
pumpkin out weeks before it should have[it aborted], which is common 
occurance for heavily laden soil with to much "N". The yellowing you had 
was probably due to insufficient "N" levels. The leaf coloring should 
have been a clue that something was wrong. I've been told that high 
levels of "N" will produce a deep green coloration on your leaves. I had 
that last year also and my plants jammed and I even got 177 pounds in 6 
days, but the stem rotted off on the 8th day,figured it couyld'nt keep 
up with the growth spurt.Hope this helps. pumpkinpiper
