Last year,my first, I used slow release fertilizer when planting out both my
pumpkins and sunflowers. I found that they were very effective giving me 10-12
foot tall sunflowers and a good crop of pumpkins. I did use high potassium
content tomato food when the pumpkins were set. The great advantage of
slow release fertilizers is that they do not appear to get washed away in the
rain. Always a consideration in Ireland. Hope this helps,
