Early season culls
Hi Everyone. Here's a question for all you experimentors out there...and all
you guys who have the guts to try your own seeds. I pollinate everything that
comes along....no,strike that.thats just gonna get me in
trouble........anyway-------I pollinated a bunch of fruit last year with
interesting crosses only to cull down to the best positioned and timed
fruits. This means that some of my favorite crosses were culled at various
points in their developement. Has anyone out there ever germinated and grown
out an early season cull ? Is there "something missing" in a not 100%
developed fruit's seeds? I have germinated and interesting cross at a greater
than 50% success rate when the fruit was only 28 days pollinated and about 90
lbs.
My next step is to repeat this with another 25 seeds and let them grow to
seedling stage to see what happens.I would imagine that they would be a
little less than vigorous until they start producing thier own food since
they more than likely would not have full food storage in the cotyledons. The
big question would then be..."If they get over the hump and into the
photosynthesis stage,do they stand a chance of being as good as a fully
dveloped seed"? Has anyone ever done this here? How did it do? And even if you
haven't done this....what do you think would happen? I need answers from all
you experienced guys/girls and input from all you thinkers out
there...thanks...Glenn
