Re: Bad Seed
In regards to bad seeds: My feelings are that there are certain traits that
are passed on to offspring, such as stem splits. But in reality all
pumpkins/squash have the potential to split, but that the growers techniques
are the main contributing factor concerning stem split. With low water
amounts you'll see Dill rings, without adequate air movement you'll see
higher chances of splits. These are all controlable by the grower. Take the
Zehr line. People haven't had much luck growing the offspring. It's a fast
and powerful grower and it takes great control through your growing methods
to get a fruit that doesn't split. Is this the plants fault or growers
fault. I believe the grower is to blame. I grew a 850 (uow) with the zehr
but stem split with 2 weeks to go. I was inexperienced with dealing with
this and didn't notice it till it was to late. Had I seen it earlier, captan
and allowing more air flow to stem area would have solved this. Grower was
to blame. Since then I weekly check and add captan to stem area, and haven't
had the problem since. I also started mounding my nursery area 2' high, and
what a difference this has made. It allows for great air movement through
plant area, and also allows me to move through plant to prune without
disturbing it to much, especially when plant is full grown. Just sharing my
thoughts. Happy Growing! Pumpkinpiper
