Re: THE BAD SEED
Chris and others,
A couple of years ago I did a survey of 40 top growers. I wanted
information on the pumpkins that didn't make it to the weigh-offs.
At the time there wasn't a Cucurbyte site and there really was no way to
get information other than the 700+booklet.
I was looking for patterns of problems. Below is an example of the
findings of the 887 orr and the negative feed back.
887ORR
500lb=hard to manage plant, low foliage had two friuts split at 500.
500lb=mishappened friut slow growth
580 low foilage slow growth
520= two pumpkins on plant slow growth
700lb=split blossom end
330 -400=two pumpkins on plant one split other just slowed
It was the same for most pumpkins 1006,697,449,559geerts, I had compiled a
bunch of negative info on 200+ pumpkins.
NOW WHERE WAS I ?? SCARED!!
Yes it was apparent that AG have problems. Now were these problems
genetic,environmental, grower mistakes or just the roll of the dice.
Could be all of the above.
Some of the seed that was problematic did great things for a different
growers.
Now if we dicuss this further on the list and a few guys have the same
similar bad experience with a seed then we create "grower sentiment" toward
a that seed.
Now what is interesting is how this grower sentiment effects seed
choice.Is this good ?? Some have ignored the sentiment and done very well.
ONE EASY WAY to cut through the chase is focus on the pumpkins that made it
to the top......they are the survivors and they are the next
