Chris, I am beginning to suspect that this is a metabolism issue worth
looking at... the "early vigor" that gets everybody so revved up early in
the season may be an undesirable trait.
I remember lots of people talking about Brett Hester's 627.5. Around the
end of July we heard lots of screaming and shouting about the developing
world records, but then the splits started. If my memory serves me
correctly. I would be interested in comments from folks who have grown that
seed - am I remembering correctly? Were there any big ones from that seed
at weighoff? Also how did the whole plant look in, say, early September?
This is one of the questions I'm addressing in the questionnaires I'm
sending out. Unfortunately, the bulk of that work will be by snail mail, so
it will be a while before I have much data back.
