Cold weather & pests

I’ve been trying to get motivated to study for a pesticide license this
winter and wonder what the outlook is for pests this summer. The last
three(?) winters have been unusually warm, but now we’re back to a true
winter with temps way below freezing for long periods of time, even here in
Virginia. Who are our bug experts out there? Will this colder winter help
to reduce insect populations for the coming year or give us any different
bugs to deal with?

And how about the effect on soil borne thingies – beneficial, detrimental or
neutral?? How will it effect nematodes?

Will Tim Aker have an easier year this time around - will the cold dispense
with some of his soil problems? What about mycorrhizal innoculants? Do any
of those survive in the soil in some winters but not others or are they
primarily attached to the roots anyway?

What different scenarios might we be facing this year in the patch?

Thanks,
Beth
