RE: Oregon Update
Ok Glenn,
I admit my priority is big over green, but I can assure you this seed line
is gonna throw some squash. Even though Brett pollinated with a pumpkin,
it's a very squashy pumpkin. I've grown a sib of the male he used as a
pollinator for the 862.5 , the 463 Hester 97 and for me it grew squash,
heavily cantalouped, creamy pale orange in the middle and green at both ends
under the webbing. Those were my first "unintentional" squash. Now I want
to grow an intentional one and
even if it's not all green, my money says it'll grow squash. The 720.5
Welty grew squash, but with the help of vegetable oil, it was a very orange
pumpkin. I'd say the odds of getting a pumpkin or squash out of either one
of these is about the same. Now if someone had a 900 Lyons seed laying
around they weren't planning to use, and were willing to part with it, I
would make that my first choice. I don't have one of those laying around.
You hard core green guys need to cut me a little slack. I'm trying to
break into greenville with the best of what I have in my collection. If the
862.5 fails to germinate or the 720.5 looks to be the stronger seedling,
I'll be going with that one. I don't feel like I can go wrong with these
being a pumpkin grower first. One seed from a squash that grew a massive
pumpkin, or one seed from a pumpkin that grew a nice squash. I'll admit I'm
sticking my big toe in and testing the water before I dive into the deep
end. That's just part of my nature. I'm glad you find it funny though
Glenn. I will too when I take a bigger squash to the weighoff in October
than you do. Even if it does turn out to be a squmpkin.
