Re: Oregon Update
I'll be using the selfed seeds from my not so giant
pumpkin from last year. I'm still weeding out limiting
factors that held last year's plants back, and educating
myself in the process, I haven't started to obsess about
seed genetics yet, that hasn't been my problem I feel, the
gravelly, unfertile, acid soil, and hot dry summers are
bigger problems for me. Knee surgery kept me from doing any
fall prep, so I'll probably be adding slow release chems to
it as soon as I have two working legs again. Ditto for more
lime, I'll probably get another soil test done to see how
much of the lime leached out over the winter from last
fall's application, and dose it again if needed.
Last year's knee surgery meant I was putting old (not old
enough as it turned out) horse manure on the patch in the
spring instead of the previous fall, and it tied up my
nitro for some time last year. At least that's fully rotted
now, and there should be enough humus left to keep all the
irrigation water from heading for China. I plan on getting
some misters to raise the humidity during the dog days.
Thankyou Jack LaRoue (sp?) for that solution.
While I'm at it, thanks to those first timer, small
children who grew smaller pumpkins than mine, so I wouldn't
be last place at Canby, it's not manly for a 41 year old
man to cry;)
