The Answer:
Traditionally American Elms
were considered the best of all street trees in North America. They were very
widespread and many towns had entire streets that were lined with only
American Elms and because of their high height and arching nature. When
streets were being named they often received this name because all of the
large elm trees. However in the last 50 years this has changed
dramatically. The Dutch Elm disease has killed millions upon millions of
American elms across North America. Now a truly giant elm is a rare sight,
most "Elm Streets" don't even have a single elm tree.
As a side note there recently was a huge find
here in Ohio. There was found an American Elm that had a high degree of
resistance to the dutch elm fungus. It is currently undergoing massive
propagation efforts and should be available commercially shortly.

John

Why exactly does just about every town in
North America have an "Elm Street"?
And no, it doesn't have anything to do with
Freddy Krueger :)
