PROPAGATING PUMPKINS... WHAT NOW? Now on year number 3 of pumpkin propagation. So what now? No 746 clone beat the 1006 pound pumpkin Joe Scherber grew from the same plant in 2000. No, the best pumpkin produced from any clone only weighed 592 pounds. Yes, a far cry from 1006! So, why even bother cloning any plant if it cannot duplicate it’s mothers weight? The answer is hopefully revealed soon! I may not try to grow another female fruit on the 746 clone I still have alive. What I will do, until I find a more vigorous species, is keep a cutting alive from the 746 { and at this time, a 891 Holland, 563 Geerts, and 808 Holland} for pollinating purposes only. I, and perhaps one of my henchmen James Kane, have already solidly produced some superior strains last season. The idea is to keep a strain alive for male pollinating purposes. The reason is quite simple. The two best plants pollinated always produce great genetics. Look at the 723... Bobier risk his reputation to label his 723 Packets "My best genetics" on his seed packets...as you may know if you got one. He had two vigorous plants, although no 1,000 pounders, he knew those two plant combinations were superior. This is what James and I are hoping to achieve. There will be a few growers who will grow our seeds, and proof will yet determine if what we are trying to accomplish is actually real. Our seed crosses should be superior genetics. Perhaps one more season will be proof of this theory, but the previous seasons crosses should be well worth the effort of growing for anyone willing to try. I also suggest contacting Kilr pumpkins, Gadberry, Len S., Beachey, and Welty. If you do not know who that is, e me! So this is what the madman is up to this year folks! No wild new experiments, just more of the same old stuff... just in case my previous stuff is now considered "old" now...LOL! There is always a new "madman" that lurks around the corner waiting to do something to further the quest for "Silver Bullet Seeds"! Best wishes to the next "new" thing to be discovered by whomever finds it! Until that is....grow our seeds! Madman Marc Colorado Springs, Colorado! --- |
