Michel,
I don't have a diary on line yet. I may do one in 2003. I have one of the
videos but if you have the books there just as good. I find the best way to
learn is to experiment with one plant and keep very detailed notes. I
discovered that in 2000 that you don't need a big plant and I started
growing in 400 sq ft and since tthere has been a lot of growers growing
smaller plants. I proud of the fact that I started this and everyone
followed. Also I tryed potting soil in 2001 and found that I had my best
results with that. I fertilize very heavy and this year I will experiment on
one plant and use very little fertilizer since thats what Bruce Whittier, Al
Eaton, Jim Kuhn and Rock Rivard do and their results have been fantastic. To
stand still and try nothing new in this sport will not result in bigger
pumpkins for yourself. Everyones climate is different and you must find out
what works for you, it won't work for everyone. This is part of the fun and
challenge of growing these critters. The books were my bible for the first
two years and are a great starting point but if you want to increase your
weights every year you must try different things.
Everyone told me it was impossible to grow a 1000 pounder in my backyard
because I was in clay and very limited space but since then I have grown 3
1000 pounders and grew a 1056.5 Dueck next door also in 350 sq ft.
Next year I will not be growing the 846 Calai again because I feel I cannot
get any bigger then 1000 pounds with that seed. I have 4 of them but will
try something different. A lot of growers think I am crazy but for me I want
to try to grow a bigger one. Since I am limited to two plants, I cannot use
one space for a seed that will produce a 1000 pounder, I am after a 1100 or
1200 pounder. I will try the 845 and the 790 Daletas. Tim Baileys 1245 was
grown in 400 sq ft with the same climate as mine, so I know its possible and
will give it a try next year. If I fail then the following year I will plant
a 846 and something different.
I guess what I am trying to say is "to move forward you have to try
something different". I've rambled on enough I hope this helps and best of
luck this upcoming season.
