RE: Well, at least they are orange....

Please don't take offense, I'm not trying to pick a
fight, but its a different world out here in the
desert. (I'm speaking of the Snake River plain right
now...) Last year we had NO RAIN between May 22nd and
September 9th. Not a drop. All the water we have
either comes down the river or from underground.

Underground water is drinking water (for us) and there
are laws against using it for irrigation other than
a 1/8 acre area "immediately around the house". They
actually use satellite or aerial imagery to find
violators! Do any more than that, and you'll get a
stiff fine! (I'm not sure if this isn't more targetted
at farmers... of course it's not an issue unless we
run out of irrigation water.)

That leaves the river (and associated canals) for
irrigation, which is fine in a normal year. We're in
our fourth year of drought right now, and this year is
shaping up to be worse. Reservoir levels are WAY down
from this time last year. There is very little snow in
the mountains, way down from normal levels. Last year
we simply ran out of water in late August/early
September, depending on where you were... When the
reservoir is empty and the river essentially stops
flowing, that's it folks!

I'm holding out hope that I'll still have water after
mid-summer, but right now its starting to look like
a miracle will be required.

Regards, Cliff

Pumpkins are never out...you should see some of the water storage systems I
have seen here in Ohio. Most of these growers would be able to grow in
drought conditions. Maybe not world records, but they could definitely grow
some big ones. Several even have contingency plans to buy water and have it
trucked in. (Not me, I would never pay to have water trucked in. I merely
have my own 1000 gallon fire truck.)

Here in Denver we suffered through the worst drought on record last year
- this year doesn't look to be any better and I expect that a ban will be
placed on outdoor watering. So pumpkins are out - but being obsessed
with orange I am thinking of trying my luck with giant carrots. Anybody
got a line on some giant carrot seeds?

Thanks,

Kevin
