I grow my own garlic... in about two months their little tops should start poking through the soil.
That site about the garlic barrier raises a good point. A healthy bird population is your best ally to control pests. I've noticed that when I see a lot of birds, I don't have problems with bugs. We frequently have "killdeer" birds around here. These typically spend a lot of time on the ground, where the bugs are, and do a good job a cleaning them out. But they also lay their nests on the ground. I was mad at myself years ago when I accidentally tilled under one of their nests! -Cliff
