Good Question!  I imagine there were many large pumpkins grown without
heating the water.  I think the concept behind this is if you live in a
cool area the last thing you want to do is cool off the soil.  It is the
oposite here in Ca. When it hits 90+ we want to cool down.   Where do you
live?
