I do not use a pump, I use a watering can. If there is no rain I fill the
container most recently emptied with the hose. This leaves me with one drum
that is always full (and warm). I do not use a hose because I like a long
slow deep water without getting the leaves and stems wet. I use 25 to 50
gallons with fertilizer every other day. This gives the soil a chance to
dry out and allows the roots to grow very deep....my roots last year were
over 24 inches long at the base of the plant and more than 12 inches deep
along the vines. I only grew 2 plants last year because of space and there
was a tree allowing only 8 hours of sunlight. My pumpkins weighed 508 lb.
and 572 lb. My father in law could not believe I grew these two pumpkins
where I did because of the low light levels....he also grows AG's. I
fertilize with less water every other day even when it rains. "with lower
amounts of fertilizer" I use about 1 KG of soluble fertilizer a week which
works out to about 1 kg per 150 U.S gallons of water a week. I have never
heard of anybody growing Atlantic Giants with anything other than warm
water......P.S. never overhead water your pumpkin plants, unless you want
to spray them with fungicide after every watering....I spray every week or
after every rain fall.
