Bryan,
I forget exactly the way the seasons run out there, but I do remember it
got very hot during the Day by the month of May....and cool at night which is
good. The hot days will give you trouble. The Atlantic Giant doesn't set fruit
at temps above 90 degrees, without special cooling help. One of my pumpkin
buddies in Atlanta, tried bucking the heat last year with shading and
extensive overhead sprinkling to cool the plants by evaporative cooling. Kind
of like the swamp coolers they had in the Army barracks @Huachuca. His
conclusion, after fighting mother nature, was to shift his growing season to
avoid the extreme heat. Next year he will start his plants in July. 50 days
later with the extra degree days, he should be ready to set fruit around the
beginning of September.....you won't be ready for the GPC weighoff in early
October, but by Halloween you could have a big one. If you shift to an early
planting, you'll have a pumpkin ready in July which is no good.
