Al, Ron, Dan, Broc, and others:
This whole conversation on genetics and the merit of different seeds in an
excellent one, I've enjoyed it imensely. I think Al summed it up real well
by saying that our greatest strength as a group is that we each have
different ideas and choose seeds in a little different way.
My two cents worth on evaluating the "success" rate of a seed is that there
is a huge factor in how experienced the grower is. I know that I've grown
seeds that also grew 700#+ fruit in my same climate, but I couldn't grow
more than a 500 pounder to save my life. In this sense its pretty hard to
evaluate a success ratio. Of the 200 people that tried a given seed maybe
3/4 of them are like me and can't grow 800# fruit even with "no fail seed".
This may be getting us out farther on a limb than we want to go, but if
every one thought the "success ratio" was really important someone with
more math skills than me could come up with a formula to rate a seeds
potential. You could factor in the number of seeds grown (that we know
about anyway), and also factor in the personal best weight for each grower.
Like I said, it may not be worth it. Just a thought.
Rick
