Wendy,
I grew Jack-Be-Littles this past summer organically and had great
success. I had two plants in slightly acidic soil that was partially
shaded and covered by a weed block plastic mulch. The vines spread
vigorously to about 10 feet. I did no pruning whatsoever and allowed
open pollination. Within about 75 days I was picking pumpkins. In the
first wave of fruit, I harvested 20 pumpkins, each of which was perfect
(good size and color). I gave these to friends in the office where I
work. They have been sitting on the tops of computer monitors ever
since. That was SIX months ago. The one I kept for myself out of this
first harvest is still firm with no signs of deterioration.
About 30 days after my first harvest, I collected another dozen or so
fruit that were not quite as perfect as the first harvest ie. some green
spots and about 25% smaller than the first batch. These didn't last as
long as the first picked. The variation in the second harvest was
probably due to the extremely dry weather in the second half of the
summer here in Baltimore, and the fact that due to the annoyance I call
employment, I wasn't able to get out and water as often as I would have
liked.
I highly recommend the Jack-Be-Littles, they're easy and fun, and they
are super for giving to friends.
Good Luck!!
G.Susel
