Temporary Greenhouse Size

It is snowing here with some rain mixed in. However, it will be time to start
building some pumpkin protection in about about two months or so. This will
require some planning and material acquisition. Here in Central PA our last
frost date is June 1 though I am afraid to count on it. Anyway I will be
starting my seeds inside around May 5 and putting them out in the garden
around May 12. This means they have about 3 weeks when they could be exposed
to frost. Each pumpkin gets its own little house and so I will be starting
with 4 houses.

My question is this, "How big does my pumpkin shelter have to be?" I have seen
other growers using anything from a small box house (Howard Dill) to something
big enough to park your car in. Last year my shelters were 6 feet by 6 feet
and 6 feet by 4 feet and they were more than adequate but we had a very cool
spring. In June these shelters defend somewhat against the wind and so maybe
the plants would be in there a month. Does anyone have any strong feelings
about cloche size? How long, if the weather were good, would a main vine be at
the 4 week stage?
