As pumpkins stop growing they lose their "shine." This loss of shine when they
are small (under 50 pounds or so) usually means they have stopped growing,
probably are losing their water content and are on the way out. They may not
have been properly pollinated or may have a terminal illness. When you cut off
the shiny pumpkin and left on the dull looking one, how large did you estimate
the size of each to be? I sure hope you didn't cut off the wrong one !
