Barb,

The reason i wait is the large pumpkins don't realy show their true shape
and ribs til well later in the game ......so many things can go wrong with
a pumpkin you want to make darn sure you have a solid one before you put
all eggs into one basket.........there is nothing worse than preparing the
soil, pruning, burying vine. weeding and all the work that goes into a
giant plant ........... go to waste if your one and only goes down mid-way
through the season....... now thats hard to take..............some growers
keep two on a plant as one is a  back up,,,,,,,there is many a grower that
swears by this because it sure beats losing all your eggs in a
fall...........brock
