Vickie:
Your last post was interesting. Particularly the part about waiting to cull
the fruit after they reach 200-300 lbs.....cut the vine by 1/3 's to prevent
surges to the pumpkins remaining.
Most of the culling I have read about occurs when the pumpkins are between the
basket-ball to small beach ball size. Shape, growth rate, position on the
vine, etc. are the deciding factors. I was surprized to learn that you wait
longer than that.
I would imagine the decision is a hard one, and one has to weigh whether or
not to cull early and risk a mistake, or cull later and make the plant share
it's nutrients with more than one large fruit. This is where personal
experience can make the difference between a huge pumpkin and a prizewinner.
I am such a woose when it comes to killing anything....plants, yeast bread
dough, etc. I will do my best to make the right choices when the time comes.
Seems so unnatural to cull healthy fruit.....but that's the name of the game
in this arena.
