You are right it is a mutation and the fruit probably killed itself. Tell
them to pollinate other females on the same plant. I had two plants last
summer do almost identical type mutation. There were seeds growing outside
the pumpkin on mine but not pushing through the blossom end. I grew my 734
on one of these plants. It was the second one pollinated on the plant. As
the first one that had the mutation grew too fast and split on the blossom
end.
