Advice needed!

Hey Everybody,
Being the first year grower that I am and having had the problems I have had
all growing season I am continuously seeking advise. I live in Central
Virginia and there does not seem to be any AG growers nearby. You guys on
this list have been a wealth of information. I read the posts everyday and
have picked up a lot form the posts.
Right now I am nursing one lone plant. I had three earlier and lost one to
gummy stem blight and lost the other to a squash vine borer. The one I have
left is the one I gave the least chances to make it! I planted my other 2 in
cow manure and really babied them much more than I have this one until now.
The one I still have is planted directly in my garden dirt and has been
getting the same fertilizer, fungicide, and insect treatment as the others.
Even when they were all healthy this one grew at the same rate as the ones
in cow manure. Is my garden soil in that good a shape? I figured the cow
manure plants would really out grow the soil planted one. Any ideas?

Another question, my remaining plant is well behind others I have seen on
the list. My main vine is only 10' long at this time. Squash bugs darn near
won the war early but I nursed it back so it was temporarily stunted. The
question is how close to the stem can you grow a big pumpkin? I have several
on the vine now about the size of a golf ball but the best looking two right
now are only 4 to 5 feet from the stem. Should I abort these later anyway
even though they are my best looking so far?

Given the time and my location do I still have a reasonable chance of
growing a reasonable pumpkin?

And last but not least does it really cost $500.00 a seed to acquire good
seeds? If so I am already out of business for next year!

Sorry for being so long winded, please forgive me.

Mark Fowler
