RE: Sugary goo

I had the same goo on my zucchini, and I treated it by injecting
insect-parasitic nematodes into the stem. Viola! The goo dried up a few
days later and the plant still looks healthy. I am presuming that it was
sap from the plant where a dreaded SVB entered, and that I killed the
culprit with the nematodes.

I have not seen any evidence of SVBs on my pumpkin, but I'm keeping an eye
out. I did see some SVB moths over a 2 week period but they seem to have
gone away. I treated my pumpkin with rotenone dust that seemed to repel SVB
moths, but did not do the same for the zucchini.

I have a squash problem and I need your help. I just spoke with John, the U
of MN Entomologist and he seemed stumped. I told him I would post my
problem
to the group - he wants a call back if you have any ideas about what could
be
causing my problem!

This a.m. I noticed I lost a squash plant. In the center growth area there
is a large spot of clear, sugar-like substance - quite a lot of it. One
half
of the plant is wilted away from the sugary spot. John said it sounded like
SVB but there is no sawdust-like substance around the plant. I have seen
that in my garden in past years and it just doesn't look the same.

There was a squash bug on the plant. I didn't notice any other bugs but I
will have to check more carefully tonight. What do you make of it?

Thanks!!

P.S. I have had ENOUGH with these insects!!! I just called the Dept of Ag
to order my materials so I could take the test to get an applicator's
license. I need to be able to use the strong stuff!! No more fooling
around.
