Yellow Crusty Substance and Aphids

Hi,

I am a first time pumpkin grower here in Tucson, Arizona. Actually, my kids
just stuck a pumpkin seed in the ground last Halloween, and it startrd to
sprout around April of this year. I have a few pumpkins growing that have
been growing for about week.

When I was out getting rid of the old leaves and dead blossoms this morning,
I noticed a few spots on a few vines that had a small patch of yellow
crusty substance on it. Also, I noticed that some of male blossoms had what
looked liked Aphids on them. I think they are Aphids as they are very,
very tiny and dark grey looking.

I am hoping that you could offer some advice as to what I should treat these
areas of concern with, or maybe there is nothing for me to be concerned
about. I just don't want to loose the pumpkins that have started to grow.
Also, I am hoping to get a few more, but so far I have not been very
successful with hand pollinating.

I just subscribed to this mailing list last week, and so far I have learned
a lot from it. Next year I am going to try and grow a giant pumpkin, as I
am too late this year as I am still learning all the in's and out's to
pumpkin growing. Boy, there sure is a lot to learn, but I find it
enjoyable.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Mary
P.S. As I am a first year grower, I would like to get some premium seeds
for next season. Any advise as to where I could obtain some would be
greatly appreciated.
