First I would recommend that you look for the cause of the split. Is the main
vine rooted in the ground so that the pumpkin, as it grew, ripped itself off
the vine? Anything like that to cause tension between the vine and the fruit?
If so, handle that first. Raise the vine up and prop it on something that
will not injure it, like a block of smooth wood, or styrofoam. You may have
to cut some roots on the vine if there are such.
Second, yes, do something to save what connection you have. Listers have used
everything from electicians tape to a substance called Tanglefoot, which is
as I recall a sticky, plastic substance used to keep critters from climbing
trees tht they should stay off.
All is not lost, but the rate of growth of the fruit should be expected to
slow down. Hopefully other posters can tell you more about Tanglefoot and
such.
Good luck.
