RE: bacterial wilt

Hello Crilly's

Don't give up hope yet. You may still have some decent pumpkins for your
efforts. I was at my patch yesterday where it was 88º at 4:00 and the 835
McIntyre plant was flagging in the heat. Mostly with the new growth.
You're quite a bit warmer in Wenatchee so what your seeing should not be too
surprising. If I had to grow them in your climate I would want to use the
techniques the California growers have developed of shading the growing tips
and using misters during the hot part of the day to keep the air temps down
a bit and minimize transpiration from the plants. This is my fifth season
growing AG's and I have become convinced that the single most important
factor to getting your pumpkins big is ensuring they have adequate water at
this point in the season. How much is adequate? Most sources will say the
equivelant of 1" of rainfall a week. How much water that is varies on the
size of the patch, but it is probably more than you think it is. When we
have our dry season I water as much as I can. I don't keep records on how
much because it is difficult for me to guage, but I have decided this year
to water as much as I can, whenever I can, and hope it will be enough. In
my situation of growing at a site away from home, working long hours and
trying to maintain a family life as well as grow large pumpkins, and also
having to be on site the entire time I am watering it is probably impossible
for me to overwater my patch. Don't let yourselves get discouraged by what
you have seen so far. Once you have some pumpkins set and growing you will
be amazed by what they do. Best of luck.
