Dear List:
Upon checking my plants after being away for a
couple of days I noticed that my main vine on the Ciliberto 983 plant had a
crosswise cut in it about 1/3 away around the vine about 10 inches from the tip
of the main. I believe it was caused by curious nephews moving a board I
had running next to it. ( Does have a heart traps work for them too ?) The
plant has been doing great and the main is out almost 14 feet with several
females which will be ready any day now for pollination. I made a paste of
Captan and filled it in and put some stakes on either side so the wind would not
stress it. Is there anything else I should be doing. The main
appears to have put on about 6 inches last night so it looks to be ok.
When I looked inside the damaged vine it appeared to have 2 umbilical like cords
running in it and one of them had been severed. There is a good flower
about 1 foot from the cut towards the stump side which I was hoping to have set
for me. Should I look for a more promising candidate on a secondary vine
or from your experience is the plant most likely going to heal
itself? Thanks for your thoughts.
Best of luck to you all.
Ned
2nd year grower.
Hoping for one big enough to take to
Altoona.
