I stand corrected. Touchy subject. Don't know if this solves the debate but I hope it helps. Found this info on the internet,.
With self-incompatible varieties, self-pollination does not work because the pollen tube grows down the style into the ovary (fruit) too slowly and sexual fertilization does not actually occur. In many of the citrus hybrids, sexual fertilization and the resultant production of seeds is necessary for commercially acceptable yields.Cross
Pollination with Other Crops in the Garden:
Much confusion exist about cross-pollination among members of the large Cucurbitaceae family. Remember that cross-pollination can occur only between varieties within a species. Since the hardshell gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) has only one member in the genus in North America, it will not cross-pollinate with any other Cucurbits. However, the varieties within the species readily
cross-pollinate with each other, hence creating the wide variety of
unpredictable shape and sizes seen in most gourd gardens.
Luffas also are in a separate genus, and do not cross-pollinate with other cucurbits. However, the ornamental gourds belong to a genus and species that has a very great many members (Cucurbita pepo). This includes many of the summer and winter squash and many other plants in the garden, While the results will not be apparent the first year, this will affect the seeds in those fruits, and the second year some unusual colors, textures and flavors in
the volunteer squash may appear in the garden.
