As promised, here is Dr. Ferrer's reply to my questions to him regarding flat
vines.

condition occurs with other vegetables and is always related to genetic

Yes, it does mean that the plant has a mutant gene and predisposes the
plant for that condition. No big deal, plants, specially hybrids have many
so called mutant genes.
