Flat vines
Dear list,
I am writing this to put some at ease over the flat vining that has been going on.
I am a recent graduate from high school, and have had many advanced biology and genetics classes. This in it self isn't impressive, but I soaked up a few bits of information.
Flat vining is a genetic mutation that only occurs on occasion. Genetic mutations do not occur overnight, they occur with at the most a percent or 2 increase per year.
This has led me and a few other people to believe that it is mostly climactic. Look at some of the facts. Last year the 846 produced no flat vines (that I know of), but this year has had quite a few. There would have been some last year if it had been genetic. Also the West coast seems to have quite a few flat vines this year (Napa, Ca has 6), but the midwest only has a couple, and the Northeast has a few. Why would the 846 Calai produce flat vines in California, but none or few in Indiana and Ohio?
I am not saying that certain seeds don't have genetic tendencies to flat vine, I am just saying that the flat vine isn't genetic.
These are my thoughts,
Tom Beachy
