Great suggestion using H2O2. 

Bleach is a good solution for washing the skin of pumpkins and squash that 
you want to store for long periods of time.

Just a note: when I was in Girl Scout camp for two weeks each summer, the 
rule  of thumb was to draw water from the clear streams or lakes while hiking 
and add bleach to the canteens so that we could use this water for drinking 
without fear that bacteria, algae and other pathogens might make us sick. 
Would I do that now? Nope!

I can't tell you how many glasses of kool-aid we drank made from clorox 
treated water.........
