Jeff,
The plant will abort its females because of something happening to the
plant or its environment; the plant wants to survive.  Most likely in your
case it is probably the hot weather.   I have had the same thing happen to
me this year.   We started off cool and wet and bang the temperatures are
soaring into the 90's.   The plant will adjust and you should start  to see
more females about 5' down from where the others have shriveled.
