Can you explain "flat vines"? What do they look like and why are they bad?..........AG Growers I Salute You!Tim,
I have some pictures of what I believe to be a flat-vine
on my website at:
http://idahopumpkin.tripod.com/
Look in the "June" section, toward the end.
A "flat-vine" plant develops a trunk that appears more like
a ribbon. In my case, the plant started to look more like
a bush type plant than a vining plant. If you've seen a bush
type pumpkin or squash plant, you know what I mean. All the
leaves tend to form on a large trunk at the base of the
plant. I'm not saying that the plant wouldn't eventually
vine out, but in this hobby of giant pumpkin growing we're
looking for optimal circumstances.
In my case I culled the flat-vining plant because it was
close to a stronger performer and all along I was planning
to cull one of them. The flat-viner also had leaves that
were about half the size of the more typical AG plant growing
two feet away.
Some seed stocks (all the seeds from a particular pumpkin)
seem to have a higher percentage of flat-vining offspring
than others, but I don't know if any scientific work has been
done on this. It would seem to be a genetic thing.
Regards, Cliff, whose patch is located in the potato fields
just outside of Pocatello...
