Half Eaten Female...

Last night I anxiously approached that luscious main vine female, ready
to wrap her in a cloak in preparation for pollination the next morning.
But alas, something had chewed a whole through the female flower and into
the female fruit itself.  I have never seen this before - is it beast or
insect - does anyway know - how do I prevent it the next time...
