Hi Henry,

You might try wrapping the flower in a layer or two of gauze or cheesecloth
prior to its opening assuring that it will keep any potential nibblers out.
Put some mothballs near it too, the fumes will keep any pest like a dog or
cat away, but won't harm the plant.  Oh the fun of growing!  Always new
challenges!
