Title: The wave
Hello, Brocks!
Just wanted to let you know - 3 or 4 years ago you
sent me some seeds from your 606 and 689. Having taken a couple of years
off from gardening, this spring I planted one each of these seeds on April
25. Both are going great guns!! Unfortunately, something
got to the garden before the 5 strand electric fence was energized and tore out
the labels from most of all of the plants, so I'm not sure which is which (no, I
didn't take notes on location, darn it!) Therefore they will be
open-pollinated, but these are the only ones growing.
Between July 3 and July 6, both vines grew
almost 3 feet in length and they are currently at about ! There are
soaker hoses running the length of the vines and they're fertilized about once a
week. We have been having horrible heat, high 80's to low 90's
daytime night time lows of 65 to 70, and humidity between 70 and
95% (southeastern Ohio), but these babies just keep going!
As of last evening, there were 2 females on
one and 3 on the other, with plenty of males on both, so there should be good
pollination. I have plans and the materials for setting
up shade cloths, should they be needed and we have pallets available,
so they will be placed under the punkins as they grow.
I'm trimming off side vines as they develop,
leaving one main down the length of the garden, but allowing one side vine
from the stump, so each vine is "L"-shaped. The heavens did
finally reward us last night with a much needed, slow 2" rain, so I'm sure all
of the plants are smiling
