I'm doing the same thing; going to cull one for a small Agricultural Fair we
have here around the first of August. If the Weather stays mild, we might
have a chance at a winner, but I dunno.
I also was going to use Hay, and also got to thinking about it actually
holding moisture close to the pumpkin, so I went with what seems to be
standard and that's Styrofoam.

Some growers use sand. Others use pieces of styrofoam.
Straw sounds like a good idea... or would it hold
moisture. I was going to try sand this year.

That is quite possible, like you say, if everything goes
well. Cull one for your fair, and set some others to grow
full term.
