Matt,
As the plant gets older, the leaves near the stump die off naturally.
Some do grow back but in the mean time, you loose the photosynthesis those
leaves were providing. You are right, nutrients do flow back to the pumpkin
from the trailing end of the vine but I think the more leaves and plant
you have on both sides of the pumpkin, the more total nutrients are available
to the pumpkin.
Regards, Bob
Matt Praetzel wrote: Hoping someone can clear this up for me: why is it better for pumpkin to grow further out the vine versus closer to the stump? It seems to me that plant energy flows both directions, from the leaves back to the stump/roots as well visa versa. I have two pumpkins on main vine, one pollinated july 1 @ 8', one pollinated july 13 @ 14'. If everything else is equal, given relative age, which one should I keep and why? thanks, Matt P--------------------------------------------------------------------- Pumpkin-growing FAQ: http://www.hort.net/lists/pumpkins/search.cgi To sign-off this list, send email to majordomo@hort.net with the message text UNSUBSCRIBE PUMPKINS |
