I believe the time duration for the female to be fertile is 4-6 hours after
she opens.    If you wait too long, then the opportunity is missed.

they just shrivel up. If the pollination holds, your pumpkin should begin
to grow and change color, if it did not it could abort right away, or
anytime up to as much as softball size. 

Again, this is from my experience, which is quite limited, but I do have 6
pumpkins set, have pollinated three in the past 4 days and so far they look
ok.
