I have a freaky looking little female on one of my plants.  It is out about

I have had a few like you are writing about. It has the vine growing as part of the pumpkin. I have never had very good luck getting them big, because as they grew they would tear themselves loose from the vine. You may want to try to elevate the pumpkin to give the vine a little more slack when it is growing. Then as the pumpkin starts to grow and get tight pull out the spacer under the pumpkin.

PS. Don't feel bad about the first one to pollunate. I still have a few to go.
