As your pumpkin grows, the stem will end up being some distance off of the
ground -- maybe a foot or two.  The vine has to raise up with the stem.  To
do so will require that the leaf nodes that are close to the stem do not
grow roots that anchor the vine to the soil.  If this occurs, you will need
to pull these roots up in order to give the vine the ability to raise up as
high as it needs to go.  It is better, in my opinion, to try to prevent
these roots from ever growing in the first place so that the plant does not
become dependent on them, and relies on other roots for nutrients and
moisture.

Hi Vince-
Ok I am wondering if I am doing something incorrect by not burying all of
my vine.  I see that you have yours buried right at the pumpkin.  Are you
not worried about the pumpkin pulling away from the vine?
I was advised to not bury several feet of vine on either side of the
pumpkin, now I am confused.
Please help
